Dyslexia

alexLysdexia is on joek.

This page is written with out the use of spell check.  Sometimes I am able to write complete sentences without the use of spell check.

Iam unable to riet sentences withoutt the useof the spacebarand of backrpspace. thisis just the wayit is.

The first sentence took much longer to write becuase of the use of the spacebar and delete button. The second sentence is an example of how I write/type free flow.

Ocationally I will get comments to use psell check.  My good firend lili is a terrific speller and she iwll sometimes let me know if I have a ton of errors. I appricate folks discomfort with my spelling faux-pas.  I do check the  spelling adn use the spell check however there are some areas where spell check just does not work.

1. If the word is spelled correctly, but is the wrong word.   Burton Bands … vs. Burton bans.  I do know the difference between the two words, but my brain does not register that there is a letter that does not belong.

2. if the Word is Capitolized, then generally the little red line telling me the work is wrong, thinking it is a proper noun. then it does not show up and I miss it.

3. sometimes the little red spell check lines go away if I have left the page or program and then return, so I don’t always catch it.

I could write on a word or page application that has a spell check all built in, then cut and paste to here.  But I don’t. I like to type directly into the little box wordpress provides.  It helps me to visualize spacing with photos.

I try to use an editor before my stuff goes out, but if I am writing late at night and my editor, Mr. Bubby, has gone to bed, then forget it.

so here is the thing.  I am dyslexic.   Always have been and will always be.  You can’t out grow it, like being born with a leg too short.  You naturally limp, but if you work twice as hard as folks with two legs that are the same, maybe folks won’t notice.  If you work only as hard as everyone else, then they will detect a limp, and when you are tired of being like everyone else, you limp with pride.

here are some of my favorite mispellings:

fro (for), untill, befor, beleive.

I am intellegent but lazy at times.  I graduted 2nd in my college class with a 3.98 GPA.  I can do it if I will myself to do it.   I see blogging as an alturnative to writng in a journal.  People do not expect a blog to be of the same literery standard as a published article or book, me included.  Or at least, I don’t beleive that the same standards apply.  I just like that fact that in spite of my dyslexia, I write.  Often.  And I do it becuase there is an element of practice to reading and writing.  I have to exercise my brain in these areas, or my dyslexia is worse.

I went to public grade school in Dedham Mass., then a couple of years at Milton Academy, then I was lucky to go to Proctor Academy in Andover Nh. There my brain matured and I learned how I learned.  Then bumbled around a bit in college and landed at Curry College.   Proctor and Curry had programs for kids with dsyslexia and were/are expensive, but worth every penny for someone like me.  I got a degree in elementary education with a concentration in special ed.  Ha and double ha.

For all fo the dyslexics in the room  rite on!  For those that are uptight with spelling rules, then don’t waist your time slamming me.  I ain’t gonna change.

  1. Hey there alex, its great to see your writing and hearing your story… listexcia is a bitch but ive heard that 9 out of 5 pilots also suffer from it… So I feel that im in great company doing what I do…I have to pass a medical every 6 months. I get to do the dreaded eye chart. My Dr. said that my vision is nearly perfect but the order is all f-ed up… I laugh and He told me that Im KO now. Proctor did help me too. I had no Idea that so many of us had the problems we did… I also remember Joci Elliot who posted above and realized when I wred her post how truly lucky we all are that we had people to recognize our difficulties and help us out…. I too love backspace and have joked a bit hear but typing can be a bitch… You go girl.
My lady is a old time CSA farmer and a gardener, landscape designer and shes my spell check I interrupt her all the time….” honey how do you spell…” rings through the house when Im working….
    Keep up the good work.
Nice hearing your voice from accross the contrie.
    Laughing over here.
    Peter

  2. Hey – I remember you well from Proctor, & am so happy to see your writing online. I think it’s ultra-cool for you to not let your dyslexia hold you back, and live with it as fully as you do! Keep up the good work – you’re inspiring!

  3. You have dyslexia, I have dyscalculia & am working for a bank! You never know where your path will take you. Best to embrace what’s so and walk proudly with that limp.
Congrats on the name change Ms. Jump.

Wow, I came to your site to find out about purchasing a merino fleece, and the dyslexia attracted me. To be honest, I had no problem reading anything you wrote. I was raised to think that a lot of spelling had to do with vision (which was how I was taught to read by my folks.) Words that are misspelled, don’t bother me, because I know what the basic word looks like; and dealing with the messenger, is just an excuse for prejudice.

In my family, dyslexia was not looked at as a problem, just a difference, as we were taught that there was more to life than reading and writing. My cousin Vera (a mechanic)is dyslexic, but she’s the go to person for anything electrical or mechanical; her hand/brain connection is blessed. She reads symbols and shapes. As kids, I thought she was smarter than me, ’cause she could read words upside down and spelled backwards.

I think we place far too much emphasis on spelling, instead of meaning, which is why other cultures have such a problem with English, and schools routinely fail kids. You have five senses, but we only use two.

Vera kids are upset with her, cause she’s the one parent who can read their text messages––the symbols and words like il b n b4 mom, l8tr, makes perfect sense. They can’t put anything over on her.LOL!

Hey, I’ll come back to the site, and if anyone has a problem with your writing, they can correct it themselves! L8tr 4 them! :-)

There’s dyslexia then there’s typing. I cn’t type without the spacebar, backspace, delete and spell check either. I may have a higher rate of success, but I correct fo everysingle time and have never once spelled actviities right. I also cofuse purple and orange and routinely forget my age..maybe that’s the issue :)
But what is the real question? Cn we read without perfect spelling and know exactly what the message is or do we need to avoid, defuse, or negate the message by getting caought up in the messanger. Its a plesant relief to not have so many rules…thanks for the freedom to just write.
