Last night it didn’t seem too odd. We got home in the early evening from taking the lambs to their new home. It was a 5 hour drive and we were both wiped, so a quiet pasture was not too odd. Sometimes when they were in the upper pasture, it would be quite at the house, so I pretended that they were there. Until I took a load of dirty clothes down to the basement laundry room.
The sheep used to hear me coming down the stairs and would greet me at the large glass sliding doors. Noses pressed up and sometimes pawing at it. I loved that door. I would turn the barn light on from the switch inside and could look right into the barn. Which was really terrific during lambing in the middle of a Vermont winter night. I would often open the door a crack and give the sheep a quick skritch.
Last night it was a bit creepy in the basement. So today I worked on cleaning stuff out. Sheep fences, panels, buckets, feeders, sheep stand and halters were all loaded up and trucked off to Green Top Farm. A good excuse to see how the primary flock is doing.
Moses has been busy breeding the polypay flock and has now been moved into the ram pen. Jason was out in the pasture with a group of ram lambs and the girls were all mixed into the main flock of breeding ewes. Bub came along on this trip and after unloading we headed over to see the ewes. Easy to pick out Tiny, Polly and Wu, being colored and all. Could not quite make out the white merino girls in the group. I called to the girls expecting that somehow they would gladly bounce over to see us.
Forget that. They have all matriculated into the main flock, and basically blew us off. Sheep being sheep.
Jason was too far away, which was my reasoning for him not coming up to say hi. Yeah for Moses. He came up to us and we had a good howdy do. He even began pacing wanting to follow us when we started to leave the barn.
The lambs have a terrific new home and there is an invite to come and see them. I wonder if they will forget me as quickly as the other flock did? Ugh. Much to quiet around here tonight.
