Emilie is the Dairy Queen

Posted by blackramfarm on April 7, 2008

Emilie has always loved cows.

When she was little we lived down the road from Al and Phillis Sherman’s dairy farm.  She and I would walk past stinky cow farm to get to Sherman’s.  Sherman’s was (and still is) a sweet smelling healthy dairy farm.  When she was 3, I made her a cow suit for Halloween.  Holstein.  She wore that costume all year.   She had bovine sneakers.  A bovine sweatshirt.  Stuffed bovines.   She loves the smell of silage.

Emilie has always liked animals.  She was a big fan of reptiles and rodents.  She was kissed by a walrus at the Aquarium.  She liked the llamas better then the alpacas.  She likes some of the sheep.  She wants to take Brutus to college with her.  More then all of that.  Emilie has always loved cows.

She milked at a couple of farms here and was involved in the 4-H dairy bowl a couple of years ago.  Her first time out she took 6th in the state of Vermont.  Not bad for being on a sheep farm.   This past year she go to go back and work at the Sherman’s farm.  She also joined the FFA in North Conway.

In the fall, she took 1st in the State for Dairy Judging.  There is a written test, and then the kids have to judge a bunch of cows, then give the reasons why they placed the cows the way they did.  This past weekend she attended the FFA convention for the State of NH.   She took 1st in the Dairy Quiz bowl for the state and 2nd in Ag. product.

The Dairy quiz bowl is a series of oral questions about bovine that you have to buzz in to answer.  Kind of like Jeopardy.  There were 20 kids in the final round.   Ag. product competition gives the contestants 20 minutes to come up with a new agricultural product, then design a marketing pitch, then present it to the judges in front of the other contestants.

Emilie was accepted to the Thompson School of Agriculture at UNH and plans to attend in the fall.   She is so amazing.   Emilie has always loved cows.  She is the Dairy Queen.
