update on Jason

Posted by blackramfarm on April 4, 2008

Well the little devil dog sprained his leg. No breaks, just soreness and swelling.   Empress Anne was pleased to see him when he returned.  I don’t really think that blue is his color.  p1010006.jpg

Jason  will probably hobble around for a while.

Before I went to the vet I was able to the the cattle wire fencing up.  What a bear.  The sheep should stay in now.  The fence has muddled the ducks a bit, but they will adjust.

p1010009.jpgI am so discouraged with this cold dark weather.   It seems that this winter will never break its grip. I bet the sheep are done with it too.

Mishap with Jason

Posted by blackramfarm on April 4, 2008

Yesterday I came home mid day  to check on the lambs and to introduce the new lamb to Ben.  We found a couple of sheep out, which was not to surprising because of the fence, or lack there of.  Getting big old pregnant Wu back in wasn’t so hard, but Jason had hurt his leg in the process of being free.

A call to the vet and an appointment later this morning.  His front  left leg is swollen and he can not put pressure on it.  Looks broken or horribly strained.  Greg our vet has casted broken lamb’s legs before.  Jason is three months old and close to 90 pounds, so getting him to the vet will take a bit of muscling.

In the mean time, I am going to get some sort of fencing up in the front to discourage the lambs from going down to Ed’s sugar house.   The newer lambs don’t care much about the sanctity of the fence.  They will push though it, just because they can.  I can’t get the electric up, most of the lower lines are still under ice.

This is when I find being a shepherd a real drag.   I am waiting for someone to call, being helpful in telling me, your sheep are out.  UGH.  I am ready to sell the bunch.  (not really, just whining here).  As much as I like the arrival of spring, sometimes it just doesn’t come easy.
